Herrin Summary

Herrin is a city located in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Marion-Herrin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,469 at the 2010 census.

History

Herrin was founded in 1883 by the Herrin Coal Company, which was owned by the Herrin brothers. The city was named after the brothers, who were originally from Herrin, Kentucky. The city was incorporated in 1891.
The city was a major coal mining center in the early 20th century. The Herrin Massacre occurred in 1922, when a group of striking miners were killed by a group of strikebreakers. The incident was one of the most violent labor disputes in American history.

Geography

Herrin is located at 37°48'25" North, 89°7'25" West (37.806944, -89.123611). According to the 2010 census, Herrin has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Herrin is a major industrial center in southern Illinois. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a Caterpillar plant, a steel mill, and a paper mill. The city also has a large retail sector, with several shopping centers and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,469 people, 3,541 households, and 2,279 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,456.3 people per square mile (563.3/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 676.3 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
