Hainesville Summary

Hainesville is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

History

Hainesville was first settled in 1836 by John Haines, a farmer from New York. He purchased land from the government and built a log cabin. The village was originally known as Haines Corners, but the name was changed to Hainesville in 1872.
The village was incorporated in 1887. In the early 1900s, the village was a popular summer resort destination for Chicagoans. The village was home to several resorts, including the Hainesville Hotel, which was built in 1891 and was the largest hotel in the area.

Geography

Hainesville is located at 42°19'25" North, 88°2'25" West (42.323, -88.040). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Hainesville is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several farms, including the Hainesville Dairy Farm, which produces milk, cheese, and other dairy products. The village is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and a golf course.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,420.8 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 571.5 per square mile (221.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
