Grantfork Summary

Fork, Illinois is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, about 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Metro-East region of the St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Fork, Illinois was founded in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Fork of the Kaskaskia” and was named after the nearby Kaskaskia River. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The village was incorporated in 1837 and was officially renamed “Grantfork” in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, who was a Union General during the Civil War.
