Godley Summary

Godley, Illinois is a small village located in Will County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated in the northeastern part of the county, approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago. As of the 2010 census, the population of Godley was 1,845.

History

Godley was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Godley family, who were among the first settlers. The Godley family had previously lived in New York, but had moved to Illinois in search of better opportunities.

The first post office in Godley was established in 1855 The village was incorporated in 1872

Geography

Godley is located at 41°25'25"N 88°2'25"W (41.423, -88.040). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Godley is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.
Godley is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 621.7 per square mile (239.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $56,250. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females.
