Fayetteville Summary

Fayetteville is a small village located in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Fayetteville was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Fayetteville was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military leader who fought alongside the American colonists during the Revolutionary War. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Fayetteville was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a canning factory. The village also had a railroad station, which connected it to St. Louis and other nearby towns.

Geography

Fayetteville is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°50'45" West (38.423, -89.846). The village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
