Elmhurst Summary
Elmhurst is a city located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It is a western suburb of Chicago, located approximately 17 miles (27 km) from the city's downtown. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 44,121.
History
Elmhurst was first settled in 1836 by European immigrants, mostly German and Swedish. The first settler was Gustavus Schubert, who built a log cabin on the site of what is now the intersection of St. Charles Road and Cottage Hill Avenue. The area was originally known as Cottage Hill, and the name was changed to Elmhurst in 1869.
The city was incorporated in 1882, and the first mayor was John D. Hammersmith. The city was named after the elm trees that grew in the area.
Geography
Elmhurst is located at 41°52′15″N 87°57′36″W (41.8710, -87.9600). According to the 2010 census, Elmhurst has a total area of 8.772 square miles (22.7 km2), of which 8.57 square miles (22.2 km2) (or 97.45%) is land and 0.202 square miles (0.5 km2) (or 2.30%) is water.
Economy
Elmhurst is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Company, the largest producer of natural stone in the Midwest.
The city is also home to several major employers, including Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Elmhurst College, and the Elmhurst Public Library.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 44,121 people, 17,541 households, and 11,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,125.3 people per square mile (1,976.3/km2). There were 18,167 housing units at an average density of 2,103.3 per square mile (809.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.6% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 8.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.4% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.2% of the population.
There were 17,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,852, and the median income for a family was $77,898. Males had a median income of $51,988 versus $41,939 for females. The per capita income for the city was $32,717. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
