Elizabethtown is a small village located in Hardin County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, and is part of the Shawnee National Forest. The population of Elizabethtown was estimated to be 545 in the year 2020.

History

Elizabethtown was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after Elizabeth, the wife of one of the settlers. The town was originally a trading post and ferry crossing, and was the first settlement in Hardin County.
In 1820, the first post office was established in Elizabethtown. The town was incorporated in 1837, and the first school was built in 1845.
In the late 1800s, the town was a major shipping port for the Ohio River. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline due to the decline of the Ohio River shipping industry. The town was also affected by the Great Depression, and many of the businesses closed.
