History
Dixmoor was first settled in 1836 by a group of German immigrants. The village was named after the first settler, John Dix. The village was incorporated in 1924.
In the early 20th century, Dixmoor was a rural farming community. The village was known for its large strawberry crop. In the 1950s, the village began to experience rapid growth as Chicagoans moved to the area in search of affordable housing.
Geography
Dixmoor is located at 41°37′17″N 87°41′17″W (41.6213, -87.6881). According to the 2010 census, Dixmoor has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Dixmoor is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several factories, including a steel mill and a plastics plant. There are also several retail stores in the village, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,902 people, 1,845 households, and 1,269 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,092.2 people per square mile (1,579.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 1,711.7 per square mile (661.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 57.2% African American, 37.2% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,945.
