Dalzell Summary
Dalzell is a small village located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Dalzell was founded in 1854 by William Dalzell, a Scottish immigrant. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small village. The village was originally called Dalzell's Grove, but the name was changed to Dalzell in 1858. The village was incorporated in 1872.
The village was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the village from 1854 to 1980. The railroad was a major source of employment for the village, and it also brought in many visitors.
Geography
Dalzell is located at 41°17'17" North, 89°2'17" West (41.288, -89.038). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Dalzell is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 514.4 per square mile (198.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845.
