Crete Summary
Crete is a village located in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,346 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
Crete was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. The first post office was established in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1892.
Geography
Crete is located at 41°25'17" North, 87°41'45" West (41.4214, -87.6958). According to the 2010 census, Crete has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Crete is home to several businesses, including a number of manufacturing companies. The village is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,068 people, 2,541 households, and 1,945 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,440.2 people per square mile (556.3/km2). There were 2,619 housing units at an average density of 531.3 per square mile (205.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.45% White, 0.90% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.45% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $45,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,845. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
