Crest Hill Summary
Crest Hill is a city located in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,837 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
Crest Hill was first settled in the 1830s by German and Irish immigrants. The city was originally known as West Lockport, and was later renamed to Crest Hill in 1871. The name was chosen to reflect the city’s location on a hill overlooking the Des Plaines River.
In the late 19th century, Crest Hill was a small farming community. The city was incorporated in 1895, and the first mayor was elected in 1896.
In the early 20th century, Crest Hill began to grow rapidly. The city was home to several factories, including the International Harvester plant, which employed many of the city’s residents.
Geography
Crest Hill is located at 41°37′17″N 88°7′45″W (41.6213, -88.1293). According to the 2010 census, Crest Hill has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2) (or 98.31%) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (or 1.69%) is water.
Crest Hill is located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city is bordered by Lockport to the north, Romeoville to the east, Joliet to the south, and Plainfield to the west.

Crest Hill’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several factories, including the International Harvester plant, which employs many of the city’s residents.

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,837 people, 7,845 households, and 5,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,567.2 people per square mile (1,380.2/km2). There were 8,323 housing units at an average density of 1,427.2 per square mile (552.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 16.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.2% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
