Cordova Summary
Cordova, Illinois is a small village located in Rock Island County, Illinois. It is situated on the Mississippi River, just south of the Quad Cities. The population of Cordova was 1,717 at the 2010 census.
History
Cordova was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Spanish city of Cordoba, which was the birthplace of one of the settlers. The village was incorporated in 1854.
In the late 19th century, Cordova was a thriving river port. It was a major stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Mississippi River. The village was also home to a number of industries, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.
Geography
Cordova is located at 41°27'25"N 90°25'45"W (41.456944, -90.429167). It is situated on the Mississippi River, just south of the Quad Cities. The village is bordered by the cities of Moline and East Moline to the north, and Hampton to the south.
The village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills.
Economy
Cordova’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and a grocery store.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
