Clay City is a small village located in Clay County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Effingham, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Clay City was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Clay County, Kentucky. The town was named after the county in Kentucky, and the first post office was established in 1859. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Clay City was a major stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, which ran through the town from 1871 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a brickyard, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
