Channel Lake Summary
Lake, Illinois is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,742 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Lake was first settled in the early 19th century by a group of settlers from New England. The village was originally known as "Independence Grove" and was incorporated in 1836. The name was changed to Lake in 1837.
The village was a popular summer resort destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was known for its beaches, fishing, and boating. The village was also home to a number of resorts, including the Grand Hotel, which was built in 1891 and was one of the largest hotels in the area.
Geography
Lake is located at 42°20'25" North, 87°51'45" West (42.340278, -87.862500). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
The economy of Lake is largely based on tourism and retail. The village is home to a number of restaurants, shops, and other businesses. The village also has a number of parks and recreational facilities, including the Lake County Forest Preserve.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,742 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,097.3 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 930.3 per square mile (358.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $71,944. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $30,845. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
