Carol Stream Summary
Carol Stream is a village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It is a western suburb of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 39,711 at the 2010 census.
History
Carol Stream was founded in 1959 by Jay Stream, a real estate developer. He named the village after his daughter, Carol. The village was incorporated in 1959 and was the first planned community in the United States.
Geography
Carol Stream is located at 41°53'25" North, 88°7'48" West (41.890278, -88.129944). According to the 2010 census, Carol Stream has a total area of 9.9 square miles (25.6 km2), of which 9.8 square miles (25.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Carol Stream is home to many businesses, including the headquarters of the Follett Corporation, a leading provider of educational materials and technology solutions. Other major employers in the village include the United Parcel Service, the United States Postal Service, and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 39,711 people, 14,845 households, and 10,845 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,037.3 people per square mile (1,561.2/km2). There were 15,521 housing units at an average density of 1,578.3 per square mile (608.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.7% of the population.
There were 14,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $73,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
