Calumet Park is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 13 miles south of the city. The population was 8,895 at the 2010 census.

History

Calumet Park was first settled in the late 19th century by German and Irish immigrants. The village was incorporated in 1925. The name Calumet Park is derived from the nearby Calumet River, which was named by French explorers in the 17th century. The river was used by Native Americans to transport goods and was a major transportation route for early settlers.

Geography

Calumet Park is located at 41°41'25"N 87°41'17"W (41.690278, -87.688056). According to the 2010 census, Calumet Park has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Calumet Park is primarily a residential community, with a few small businesses located in the village. The village is home to a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses, including a steel mill, a chemical plant, and a paper mill.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 20.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
