History

Wayne County was formed in 1819 from Edwards County. It was named for General Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. The county seat was originally located in Covington, but was moved to Fairfield in 1824. The county was largely agricultural in the 19th century, with corn, wheat, and oats being the main crops. The county also had a thriving timber industry, with lumber being shipped down the Big Muddy River.
In the early 20th century, the county began to diversify its economy. The first coal mine opened in 1906, and by the 1920s there were over 20 coal mines in the county. The coal industry declined in the 1950s, and the last mine closed in the 1970s. The county also had a thriving oil industry, with several oil wells being drilled in the 1920s and 1930s.
