Randolph County Summary

Randolph County is located in the southwestern corner of Illinois, and is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. History

Randolph County was formed in 1818 from parts of St. Clair and Madison counties. It was named after Edmund Randolph, the first U.S. Attorney General. The county was initially divided into six townships: Kaskaskia, Prairie du Long, Red Bud, Rockwood, St. John, and Union. The county was later divided into twelve townships: Baldwin, Belleview, Chester, Coulterville, Evansville, Kaskaskia, Prairie du Long, Red Bud, Rockwood, St. John, Union, and Walshville.
The first settlers in Randolph County were French-Canadian immigrants who arrived in the early 1800s. They were followed by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. The county was largely agricultural, with corn, wheat, and oats being the main crops. The county also had a thriving timber industry, with lumber being shipped down the Mississippi River to St. Louis.
