History

The area that is now Jersey County was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first county seat was established in 1839 in the town of Jerseyville. The county was named after the state of New Jersey, as many of the early settlers were from that state.
In the mid-1800s, the county was a major center for the production of lead and zinc. The area was also known for its coal mining industry.

Geography

Jersey County is located in the southwestern corner of Illinois, bordered by the Mississippi River to the west and the Illinois River to the east. It is part of the Metro East region of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The county has a total area of 545 square miles, of which 543 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts. The highest point in the county is located in the western part, at an elevation of 830 feet.

The economy of Jersey County is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large agricultural operations, including grain and livestock farms. The county is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large paper mill in Grafton.
