Geography

Fayette County is located in the southeastern part of Illinois, and is bordered by Effingham County to the north, Marion County to the east, Clay County to the south, and Bond and Montgomery counties to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 575 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county. The Kaskaskia River flows through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds scattered throughout.

History

Fayette County was formed in 1821 from parts of Bond and Crawford counties. It was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The county seat was originally located in the town of Fayetteville, but was moved to Vandalia in 1823.
The county was largely agricultural in the 19th century, with corn, wheat, and oats being the main crops. The county also had several coal mines, which provided employment for many of the residents.
