Bureau Junction Summary

Bureau Junction is a small village located in Bureau County, Illinois. It is situated in the north-central part of the state, about 90 miles west of Chicago. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is part of the Princeton-Oglesby-Bureau-Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Bureau Junction was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Bureau County, Illinois. The village was named after the nearby Bureau Creek, which was named after the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the village quickly grew to become a thriving agricultural community.
In 1871, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad built a line through Bureau Junction, connecting it to the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis. This allowed the village to become a major shipping hub for the surrounding area.
