History
Broughton was founded in 1858 by William Broughton, a local farmer. The village was originally known as Broughtonville, but the name was changed to Broughton in 1868. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Geography
Broughton is located at 38°17'25"N 88°51'45"W (38.290278, -88.862472). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Broughton is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including the Broughton Dairy Farm, which produces milk and other dairy products. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a grocery store, and a hardware store.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
