Brookport Summary

Brookport is a small city located in Massac County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the Ohio River, just south of the Kentucky border. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Brookport was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was originally known as "Kentucky Landing" and was a popular stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Ohio River. In 1854, the town was renamed Brookport after the nearby Brookport Creek.
In the late 1800s, Brookport was a thriving river port town. It was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the river traffic decreased. The Great Depression further weakened the town's economy, and many of the businesses closed.

Geography

Brookport is located at 37°7′17″N 88°37′17″W (37.1214, -88.6214). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Brookport is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 535.3 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
