Bonfield Summary

History

The small village of Bonfield, Illinois is located in Kankakee County, approximately 60 miles south of Chicago. The area was first settled in 1834 by a group of pioneers from New York. The village was originally known as “Bonfield’s Grove” and was named after the first settler, William Bonfield. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, the village was a thriving agricultural community. The main crops grown in the area were corn, wheat, and oats. The village also had a number of small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill.
In the early 20th century, the village began to experience a period of growth and development. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a line through the village in 1906, which helped to spur economic growth. The village also had a number of small factories, including a brickyard, a canning factory, and a furniture factory.
In the mid-20th century, the village experienced a period of decline. The railroad line was abandoned in the 1950s, and many of the factories closed. The village also experienced a population decline, as many of the residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities.

Geography

Bonfield is located in Kankakee County, approximately 60 miles south of Chicago. The village is situated on the banks of the Kankakee River, which flows through the area. The village is surrounded by farmland and is located near the Kankakee River State Park.
