Blue Island, IL is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 16 miles south of the city’s downtown. The population of Blue Island was 23,706 at the 2010 census.

History

Blue Island was first settled in the 1830s by a group of settlers from New England. The town was originally known as “Blue Island” due to the bluish tint of the soil in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1835 and was named after a nearby island in the Calumet River.
In the late 19th century, Blue Island became a major industrial center, with several factories and railroads located in the area. The town was also home to a large number of immigrants, primarily from Germany, Ireland, and Italy.
In the early 20th century, Blue Island experienced a period of rapid growth, with the population increasing from 4,000 in 1900 to over 20,000 by 1930. During this time, the town was home to a number of prominent businesses, including the Blue Island Brewing Company, the Blue Island Brick Company, and the Blue Island Dairy Company.

Geography

Blue Island is located at 41°40′25″N 87°41′17″W (41.673611, -87.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Blue Island is located on the Calumet River, which flows through the city from east to west. The city is bordered by the cities of Calumet City to the north, Posen to the east, and Robbins to the south.

Economy

Blue Island’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to a number of factories, including the Blue Island Brick Company, the Blue Island Dairy Company, and the Blue Island Brewing Company. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Target, and a Home Depot.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,706 people, 8,945 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,619.3 people per square mile (1,785.2/km2). There were 9,717 housing units at an average density of 1,902.3 per square mile (732.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 64.2% White, 22.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.2% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 19.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,902, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,890. About 9.7% of families and 12.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
