Bloomington Summary

Bloomington, Illinois is a city located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of McLean County and the 12th most populous city in the state of Illinois. The city is located in the heart of the Midwest, approximately halfway between Chicago and St. Louis. Bloomington is the home of Illinois State University and the headquarters of State Farm Insurance.

History

Bloomington was founded in 1831 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The city was named after Bloomington, Indiana, which was named after the blooming flowers that were found in the area. The city was incorporated in 1855 and was the first city in McLean County.
In the late 19th century, Bloomington was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. The city was also home to the first African-American church in the county, the Second Baptist Church.
In the early 20th century, Bloomington was a major center for the manufacturing of farm equipment. The city was also home to the first public library in the county, the Bloomington Public Library.

Geography

Bloomington is located in central Illinois, approximately halfway between Chicago and St. Louis. The city is situated on the banks of the Illinois River and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Economy

Bloomington is a major economic center in central Illinois. The city is home to several major employers, including State Farm Insurance, Illinois State University, and Mitsubishi Motors. The city is also home to several major retail and entertainment venues, including Eastland Mall and the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
