Belgium is a small village located in Randolph County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the Kaskaskia River, about 10 miles (16 km) east of Sparta. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Belgium is located at 38°17′17″N 89°45′45″W (38.288056, -89.762500). According to the 2010 census, Belgium has a total area of 0.45 square miles (1.17 km2), all land.

History

Belgium was founded in 1836 by a group of Belgian immigrants who had settled in the area. The village was named after their homeland. The first post office was established in 1837.

Economy

Belgium is a small rural village with a population of 545 people. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,211.1 people per square mile (468.2/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 507.8 per square mile (196.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
