Bartelso Summary

Bartelso is a small village located in Clinton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centralia, Illinois Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Bartelso was founded in 1854 by German immigrants. The village was named after the Bartelso family, who were among the first settlers. The first post office was established in 1856.

Geography

Bartelso is located at 38°45'25" North, 89°25'25" West (38.756944, -89.423889). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Bartelso is a small rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 218 housing units at an average density of 358.2 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17.
