The area that is now Annawan was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Hardscrabble”, but was later renamed Annawan in 1854 after the local Native American tribe, the Annawon. The village was officially incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Annawan was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a canning factory. The village also had a number of stores, a hotel, a bank, and a post office.

Annawan is located at 41°17'25" North, 90°25'45" West (41.290278, -90.429167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.

The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.

The per capita income for the village was $19,845.
