History

The area that is now Islandia was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The area was known as "Islandia" by the early 1700s, and the name was officially adopted in 1873 when the village was incorporated.
The village was originally a farming community, but in the 1950s it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Long Island's major airports and highways. The population of Islandia increased from 1,000 in 1950 to 3,335 in 2010.

Economy

Islandia is home to several large businesses, including the headquarters of the computer company CA Technologies, the software company Computer Associates, and the electronics company Audiovox. The village is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,335 people, 1,093 households, and 845 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,788.3 people per square mile (1,077.2/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 908.3 per square mile (350.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $76,944, and the median income for a family was $86,944. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $30,944.
