Brentwood Summary

Brentwood is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of Brentwood was 60,664.

History

The area now known as Brentwood was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians, a branch of the Algonquin tribe. The Secatogue Indians were a peaceful tribe that lived off the land, fishing, hunting, and gathering. The Secatogue Indians were eventually driven out of the area by the English settlers in the 1600s.
The area was then settled by English colonists in the late 1600s. The first settlers were Thomas and Mary Smith, who arrived in 1680 and established a farm. The Smiths named their farm "Brentwood" after the town of Brentwood in Essex, England.
The area remained largely rural until the late 19th century, when it began to be developed as a residential suburb of New York City. The Long Island Rail Road was extended to Brentwood in 1844, and the area began to grow rapidly. By the early 20th century, Brentwood had become a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers.
