Bellmore Summary

Bellmore is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is located on the South Shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. As of the 2010 census, the population of Bellmore was 16,218.

History

The area now known as Bellmore was originally inhabited by the Meroke Indians, a branch of the Algonquin tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the area was known as “New Bridge” due to the presence of a bridge over the Meroke River. In 1868, the area was renamed “Bellmore” after the Bell family, who had purchased a large tract of land in the area.

Geography

Bellmore is located at 40°39'17" North, 73°32'45" West (40.654722, -73.545833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Bellmore’s economy is largely based on retail and services. The area is home to a variety of small businesses, including restaurants, banks, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of larger businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Home Depot, and a Target.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 16,218 people, 5,845 households, and 4,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,845.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $97,945, and the median income for a family was $112,945. Males had a median income of $76,945 versus $50,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $41,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
