West Islip Summary
West Islip is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 28,335 at the 2010 census.
History
The area now known as West Islip was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians. The Secatogue Indians were part of the Algonquin Nation and were a peaceful tribe that lived off the land. The Secatogue Indians were eventually driven out of the area by the English settlers in the 1600s.
The area was first settled by Europeans in the late 1600s. The first settlers were mostly English and Dutch farmers who established small farms in the area. The area was known as West Islip by the mid-1800s.
In 1882, the Long Island Rail Road opened a station in West Islip, which helped to spur the growth of the area. The area was mostly rural until the 1950s when the population began to grow rapidly.
Geography
West Islip is located at 40°41'25" North, 73°17'45" West (40.690278, -73.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
Economy
West Islip is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the area. The largest employer in the area is the West Islip School District, which employs over 1,000 people. Other major employers include the West Islip Fire Department, the West Islip Public Library, and the West Islip Chamber of Commerce.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 28,335 people, 10,845 households, and 7,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,457.2 people per square mile (1,339.2/km2). There were 11,093 housing units at an average density of 1,355.3 per square mile (524.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $77,945. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $30,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
