West Hempstead Summary
Hempstead is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 24,100 at the 2010 census. West Hempstead is located in the southwest corner of the Town of Hempstead, and is bordered to the west by the Village of Garden City, to the north by Franklin Square, to the east by Elmont, and to the south by Valley Stream.
History
West Hempstead was originally part of the Hempstead Plains, a large area of flat, treeless land that was once part of the Hempstead Plains Reservation. The area was first settled by Europeans in the mid-17th century, and was part of the Town of Hempstead until 1869, when it was incorporated as the Village of West Hempstead. The village was dissolved in 1925, and the area was annexed by the Town of Hempstead.
Geography
West Hempstead is located at 40°41'25" North, 73°41'17" West (40.690278, -73.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all land.
Economy
West Hempstead is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 24,100 people, 8,717 households, and 6,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 10,541.3 per square mile (4,072.2/km2). There were 8,945 housing units at an average density of 3,902.3/sq mi (1,504.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 7.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 8,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.23.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $71,917. Males had a median income of $45,917 versus $35,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
