Sylvan Beach Summary

Sylvan Beach is a village located in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census. The village is located on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake, and is part of the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Sylvan Beach was originally known as Verona Beach, and was founded in 1853 by William H. Verona. The village was renamed Sylvan Beach in 1872, after the nearby Sylvan Grove Hotel. The hotel was built by the Syracuse and Utica Railroad, and was a popular destination for tourists.
The village was incorporated in 1894. In the early 20th century, Sylvan Beach was a popular resort destination, with several hotels, amusement parks, and a boardwalk. The amusement parks included the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park, which opened in 1895, and the Luna Park Amusement Park, which opened in 1906.

Geography

Sylvan Beach is located at 43°9'25" North, 75°41'25" West (43.156944, -75.690317). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Sylvan Beach is a popular tourist destination, with several hotels, restaurants, and shops. The village is also home to several marinas, which offer boat rentals and fishing charters.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 741.2 per square mile (286.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,945.
