Solvay Summary
Solvay, NY is a small village located in Onondaga County, New York. It is a suburb of Syracuse and is part of the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village is located on the west side of Onondaga Lake and is bordered by the towns of Geddes, Camillus, and Van Buren. The population of Solvay was 6,584 at the 2010 census.
History
Solvay was founded in 1848 by John Solvay, a Belgian immigrant who had come to the United States in 1832. He purchased a large tract of land on the west side of Onondaga Lake and began to develop the area. He built a sawmill, gristmill, and a paper mill, which became the foundation of the village. The village was incorporated in 1887.
In the late 19th century, Solvay was a major industrial center. The Solvay Process Company, founded by John Solvay, was the largest employer in the village. The company produced soda ash, which was used in the production of glass, soap, and paper. The company also produced chlorine and caustic soda, which were used in the production of bleach and other chemicals.
In the early 20th century, Solvay was home to several other industries, including a steel mill, a brickyard, and a tannery. The village also had several retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a drug store.
Geography
Solvay is located at 43°3′17″N 76°13′17″W (43.054722, -76.221389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Solvay is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the village. The largest employer in the village is the Solvay Process Company, which produces soda ash, chlorine, and caustic soda. Other businesses in the village include a grocery store, a hardware store, and a drug store.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,584 people, 2,717 households, and 1,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 5,541.7 people per square mile (2,139.7/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 2,457.5 per square mile (945.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,972. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
