Sodus is a town located in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 5,908 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Sodus Bay, which is located on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.

Geography

Sodus is located in the northwest corner of Wayne County, bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, Sodus Bay to the east, and the towns of Huron and Wolcott to the south and west, respectively. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles (86.1 km2), of which, 28.2 square miles (73.0 km2) of it is land and 5.0 square miles (13.1 km2) of it (15.09%) is water.

History

The area that is now Sodus was first settled around 1789 by pioneers from New England. The town was formed in 1806 from part of the town of Williamson. The town was named after Sodus Bay, which was named after the Iroquois word for "place of rushes".
The town was an important port on Lake Ontario, and was the site of the first lighthouse on the lake, built in 1825. The town was also the site of the first steamboat on the lake, the "Ontario", which was launched in 1817.

The economy of Sodus is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, fruit farms, and vegetable farms. The town is also home to several wineries, including the Sodus Bay Winery and the Sodus Point Winery.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,908 people, 2,521 households, and 1,619 families residing in the town. The population density was 209.3 people per square mile (80.7/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 101.2 per square mile (39.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,938. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.3% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
