Savona Summary

Savona is a small village located in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Corning–Painted Post Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Savona was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as "Savannah," after the town of Savannah, Connecticut. The name was changed to "Savona" in 1808. The village was incorporated in 1848.

Geography

Savona is located at 42°17′N 77°20′W (42.28, -77.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Savona is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 672.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
