Port Byron Summary

History

Port Byron is a village located in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. The village is named after Lord Byron, a famous English poet. The village is located within the Town of Mentz and is part of the Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The area was first settled in 1791 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was incorporated in 1833 and was named after Lord Byron. The village was a major port on the Erie Canal and was a major hub for the transportation of goods and people.
The village was home to several industries, including a paper mill, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a tannery. The village was also home to a number of churches, including the First Presbyterian Church, which was founded in 1834.
