Oyster Bay Summary

Oyster Bay is a hamlet and census-designated place located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is situated on the North Shore of Long Island, and is part of the Greater New York City metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Oyster Bay was 18,744.

History

The area that is now Oyster Bay was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1653, and the hamlet was officially established in 1667. The hamlet was named after the abundance of oysters found in the area.
In the late 19th century, Oyster Bay became a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The area was home to several grand estates, including the estate of Theodore Roosevelt, which is now a national historic site.

Geography

Oyster Bay is located at 40°51'25"N 73°30'45"W (40.856944, -73.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Oyster Bay is a largely residential community, with a few small businesses located in the hamlet. The largest employer in the area is the Theodore Roosevelt Estate, which is a popular tourist destination. Other local businesses include restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 18,744 people, 6,845 households, and 4,919 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,286.3 people per square mile (883.3/km2). There were 7,082 housing units at an average density of 862.2 per square mile (332.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,843, and the median income for a family was $90,917. Males had a median income of $60,871 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $35,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
