Geography
Oxford is located in the south part of Chenango County, south of the city of Norwich. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 36.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.28%) is water.
The east town line is the border of Madison County, and the south town line is the border of Broome County.
New York State Route 12, an east-west highway, passes through the town. New York State Route 220 is a north-south highway that intersects NY-12 in the hamlet of Oxford.
History
The first settlers arrived in the area around 1790. The town of Oxford was formed in 1817 from the town of Norwich.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,619 people, 1,039 households, and 717 families residing in the town. The population density was 72.3 people per square mile (27.9/km^2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 32.2 per square mile (12.4/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.50% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.88% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.01.
