Otego Summary

Otego is a town located in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. The town is in the south-central part of the county, south of Oneonta.

History

The area that is now Otego was first settled around 1790. The town was formed from the Town of Unadilla in 1808. The town was named after the Otego Creek, which flows through the town.

Geography

Otego is located in the south-central part of Otsego County, south of Oneonta. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2sqmi, of which 35.9sqmi is land and 0.3sqmi, or 0.86%, is water.
The Otego Creek flows through the town. The Susquehanna River forms the eastern boundary of the town.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density was 79.3 people per square mile (30.6/km^2). There were 1,213 housing units at an average density of 33.7 per square mile (13.0/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $44,844. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $23,906 for females.
