Hornell was first settled in 1790 by Zebulon Swift and his family. The area was originally known as "Swift's Landing" and was later renamed "Hornellsville" after the Hornell family, who were early settlers in the area. The city was incorporated in 1888.
Hornell was an important railroad center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Erie Railroad, the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and the New York Central Railroad all had major yards and shops in the city. The city was also home to the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), which manufactured locomotives from 1901 to 1969.

Hornell is located at 42°20'N 77°41'W (42.33, -77.68). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Hornell's economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Alstom, a French-based power generation company, and St. Lawrence Cement, a cement manufacturer. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
