Nedrow Summary

Nedrow is a small hamlet located in Onondaga County, New York, United States. It is located in the town of Onondaga, just south of Syracuse. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Nedrow was first settled in 1794 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The settlers named the area after their leader, John Nedrow. The area was originally part of the Onondaga Nation, and the settlers were granted permission to settle in the area by the Onondaga Nation.

The first post office in Nedrow was established in 1820 The hamlet was incorporated in 1848

Geography

Nedrow is located at 43°3′17″N 76°14′17″W (43.054722, -76.238056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Nedrow is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Syracuse for work. The hamlet does have a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the hamlet. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 767 housing units at an average density of 1,093.6 per square mile (422.3/km2). The racial makeup of the hamlet was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the hamlet, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
