Long Beach Summary
Long Beach, New York is a city located in Nassau County, on the south shore of Long Island. It is situated on a barrier island, which separates the Atlantic Ocean from Reynolds Channel. History
Long Beach was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, a sub-tribe of the Lenape people. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1643, when Thomas Powell purchased land from the Rockaway Indians. The area was known as "Powell's Neck" until 1867, when it was renamed Long Beach. The city was incorporated in 1922, and was initially a popular summer resort destination.

Long Beach is located on a barrier island, which separates the Atlantic Ocean from Reynolds Channel. The city is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south, East Rockaway Inlet to the east, Reynolds Channel to the north, and Jones Inlet to the west. The city has a total area of 5.5 square miles, of which 4.9 square miles is land and 0.6 square miles is water.
