Hudson is located at 42°14′N 73°48′W (42.23, -73.80). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
The city is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, about 90 miles north of New York City. The city is bordered by the towns of Greenport to the north, Claverack to the east, and Stockport to the south.

The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
