Hudson Falls Summary

Hudson Falls is a village located in Washington County, New York, United States. The population was 5,027 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Hudson Falls was originally inhabited by the Mohawk people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The village was originally known as "Hogansburg" and was part of the town of Kingsbury. In 1810, the village was renamed "Hudson Falls" after the nearby falls on the Hudson River.
The village was incorporated in 1866. In the late 19th century, the village was a major industrial center, with several paper mills, a tannery, and a foundry. The economy of the village declined in the early 20th century, and many of the factories closed.

Geography

Hudson Falls is located at 43°17′N 73°37′W (43.28, -73.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, just south of the city of Glens Falls. The village is bordered to the north by the town of Kingsbury, to the east by the town of Fort Edward, to the south by the town of Moreau, and to the west by the town of Queensbury.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,027 people, 2,093 households, and 1,323 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.3/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 1,039.2 per square mile (400.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
