History
Heuvelton was first settled in 1797 by a group of Dutch settlers from the Netherlands. The village was originally known as "Holland Patent" and was later renamed "Heuvelton" after the Dutch word for "hill town". The village was incorporated in 1845.
Geography
Heuvelton is located at 44°37′N 75°17′W (44.619, -75.286). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Heuvelton is a small rural village with a limited economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and a few restaurants. The village also has a small industrial park, which is home to several small manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 663.2 per square mile (256.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.37% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
