The area that is now Henderson was first settled around 1802. The town was formed in 1817 from the town of Adams. The town was named after William Henderson, an early settler.

Henderson is located in the northwest corner of Jefferson County, bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, the St. Lawrence River to the east, and the town of Adams to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 35.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8%) is water.

Economy

Henderson is a rural town with a primarily agricultural economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few small retail stores. The town is also home to a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density was 79.2 people per square mile (30.6/km^2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 32.7 per square mile (12.6/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
