Endwell Summary
Endwell is a hamlet located in the Town of Union in Broome County, New York. It is located on the south side of the Susquehanna River, just east of the City of Binghamton. Endwell is part of the Greater Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Endwell was 8,945 at the 2010 census.
History
Endwell was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The settlers named the area “Endwell” because it was the end of their journey. The area was originally part of the Town of Union, which was established in 1791. In 1808, the Town of Union was divided into two parts, with the northern part becoming the Town of Vestal and the southern part remaining the Town of Union. Endwell was part of the Town of Union until 1867, when it was incorporated as a village.
In 1891, the village of Endwell was annexed by the City of Binghamton. The village was then reincorporated as a hamlet in 1921.
Geography
Endwell is located at 42°05'N 75°54'W (42.08, -75.90). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Endwell is located on the south side of the Susquehanna River, just east of the City of Binghamton. It is bordered by the Town of Vestal to the north, the Town of Union to the east, and the Town of Maine to the south.
Economy
Endwell is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The hamlet is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including Endicott Interconnect Technologies, a manufacturer of electronic components and systems.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,945 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in Endwell. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 937.2 per square mile (362.2/km2). The racial makeup of the hamlet was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the hamlet, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the hamlet was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the hamlet was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
